Converting Photoshop PSD Files Into A Valid HTML Web Page (David Kalin)
Mar 17, 2010
Here's a little information that might help get you started in the right direction if you are one of those who have a Photoshop designed image and would like to turn it into a fully functioning website for yourself. This isn't going to be step by step instructions but merely a bridge of info so you can more fully understand what needs to be done and where to start applying your research time and know what needs to be done to the PSD image file in question.
If you want to create a web page or even an entire website from an image file you'll have to first convert it into a file format that supports a standard web based language. While there are different web languages for you to choose from, HTML and XHTML are among the most commonly used. So then, once you have converted the PSD file into an HTML file it will then function as a true web page and will no longer be just an image.
You have a few choices available in order to convert it. You can either convert it manually by hand coding, convert it using special software, or simply hire someone to convert it for you. I'll briefly describe each one and then it's up to you. Choosing hand coding as your conversion method is by far the most difficult and requires a good amount of knowledge in working with image files, layers and a solid grasp of the HTML language or an HTML editor as well as any other languages that you need included in your site, such as Java or Flash, etc. This method basically consists of "slicing" the PSD image into many smaller parts or "layers" and then reconstructing them again by hand coding a new html and css file from scratch which will construct all the slices back together again under the new format in such a way that it will mirror as closely as possible the original image. Using software as your method of conversion is a bit quicker and slightly more automated but still requires that you feel confident working with graphic layers and html editors, and of course there is a typically a cost involved with purchasing the software (typically a couple hundred dollars or more, depending). You can find this type of software on the internet and you may feel it is worth the expense if you plan on having to perform these types of conversions for more than just once, or if you have a lot of pages to convert.
For someone with little or no prior experience in such endeavors your best choice is probably going to be just hiring someone to do the PSD to HTML conversion for you. Pricing for such services can vary greatly and will normally be dictated by the complexity of your specific project. Expect to pay at least $50 per page or more for a good professional who can properly handle the job. Some of these service companies will use hand coding as their conversion method or a combination of both software and hand coding.
At least now, you have a better understanding of what needs to be done in this situation and where you might need to begin looking to get your project completed. While image based web designs can be a bit of a pain to deal with due to the conversion factor and other maintenance related challenges, they also tend to make some of the most visually attractive presentations and can help to make your site more popular.
