Web Hosting: To Pay Or Not To Pay (Suzana Ognen)

Sep 6, 2009

It is difficult to find something nowadays that embodies both affordability and quality. Most of the time an affordable thing lacks good quality and something that has topnotch quality is very expensive. Hence, we cannot get the best of both worlds. In web hosting, such dilemma also exists: there are sites that are free but with limited quality and there are sites that have relatively good quality but they demand payment.

Free Web Hosting: The concept of "free" has a certain magic on it. When it is heard or read by a person, it creates the picture of an idyllic purchase - something that is really a bonus in this otherwise capitalist society. Free products and services became the silent wish of many people. Hence, free web hosting sites attract hordes of customers because it became a symbol of a successful purchase achievement in the contemporary society. In itself, it has a lot of good things in it aside from its nature that does not require payment. Other free web hosting sites have relatively good performance when it comes to services because some of them offer the same range of services as that of paid web hosting sites.

However, such sites are really rare - you really have to sift through the multitude of sham sites that often promotes scam-like activities. The other 'just alright' sites cannot match the services offered by paid sites hence your disk space and bandwidth are limited. Moreover, it poses a problem also regarding the amount of users using the same server. More often than not, free sites often utilize only one domain name. Hence, if the other users of that server engaged in unscrupulous activities such as scamming, sending virus and worms, sending spam mails and others, your website would suffer the same restrictions because spam filters would restrict your mails together with the spammer site.

Such kinds of hosts are good if you only plan to manage a small website that does not have interactive programs. It is also good if you are only using it for a temporary website. However, if you are planning to build a commercial site, free web hosting sites are not usually recommended.

Paid Web Hosting: Paid web hosting sites requires any user to pay for their services. Though the amount is relatively small (it only cost a minimum of 3 dollars to a maximum of 10 dollars), not all of us can pay it. However, if you happen to have a relatively big capital or if matters of finance is not a problem, going for these sites are highly recommended because they offer other add-on or bonus package in their services. Moreover, most of them support various email formats that are not supported by other free web hosting sites. Service price are different from one host to another but it does not mean that a more expensive site is better.

Paid web hosting is not always a good thing because those who offer cheaper rates will eventually increase after a period of time. There are also limitations especially for cheaper sites like bandwidth and disk space sizes.
