Moving A New Url With Your Special Website Hosting (Stephen Grisham, Sr.)

Aug 23, 2010

If your server logs the referrals to your website, use that information to list all the sources on the Internet that caused visitors to come to your page. When you change your URL, you have to check back at the other sites to ensure that they now refer to your new URL rather than the old one. If this is the case, contact the webmaster to have him change your URL information to your new site.

If your URL has been submitted to online directories, you'll have to update each of them individually. To update links to your site, use a major search engine to find links to your old URL, and manually change each one.

This can be somewhat time-consuming, as you must manually check the URLs much of the time. A truly smooth transition will include a redirect page on your old website hosting account that leads to the new URL. Know, though, that not all of your audience will reach the new site right away; some webmasters will have disappeared, while their sites will show your old URL and lead visitors there instead.

It isn't just enough to ask external sites to update your URL; you'll also want a redirect page on the old URL leading to the new site. This page could be as simple as a link to your new URL that visitors can click to go there. There's a downside to this, though; a lot of Internet browsers don't follow links.

In addition to fixing your URL on third party websites, you also need to redirect your visitors from your old site to your new one. This could be as simple as a page linking visitors to your new site. This approach has the issue, though, that many online users won't follow the links. If they have any problem getting to your site, they may just give up and try something else. So, when you change your URL, you have to check back at the other sites to ensure that they now refer to your new URL rather than the old one. If this is the case, contact the webmaster to have him change your URL information to your new site.
