Start a Gift Basket Business - Making Gift Baskets (Sienna Taylor)

Aug 9, 2009

A gift basket business is relatively straight forward to set up, requires a low budget for startup costs and offers entrepreneurs a great opportunity to have their own business and work from home. Those interested in getting started in this industry will find the following tips and advice about designing and puuting baskets together useful for their new venture.

Look for a suitable supplier that is able to regularly supply you with quality baskets in a variety of sizes and shapes. Remember though that you don't always have to use regular baskets and can consider other forms of container for themed baskets. Whatever you use make sure that you don't clutter it with too many items or under-fill it as it could appear to be either messy or cheap and 'of poor value' when the customer receives it.

When planning new basket concepts give some thought to the colors of your products, baskets and packaging and how various combinations will work together.

Consider using shredded paper in your basket creations so that you can not only protect some of the breakable items but can also elevate some of them up for higher, more eye pleasing placement in the basket.

Keeping in mind that clients will often want to photograph or display your products you should give them an obvious 'front'. You can position items to make it more attractive on one side than the other.

In order to avoid having the contents of your baskets fall out of place during transit make sure that all items are fixed in place with tape.

Always wrap your baskets up with something like cellophane to protect the contents during shipping and to add a nice finishing touch. Finally, you can add other finishing touches and decorations and offer clients a way of getting a personalized message on the outside of the package such as a card or a printed ribbon.

Make sure that you get your business name and contact details into each of your baskets so that satisfied customers will know how to contact you next time they find themselves in need of a gift.

Try to keep improving on your basket concepts, themes and designs. Keep studying art, crafts and design on the Internet and elsewhere so that you always have fresh ideas.

Get your gift basket company off to a great start by knowing how to design and assemble highly marketable products as well as having skills in small business management and promotion.
