Common Website Design Mistakes Made by Professionals (Musa Aykac)

Dec 11, 2008

Designing a website should be left to professional designers and not to an amateur designer. Though there are innumerable tools that can guide you effectively in designing a website, mistakes are commonly made by all of us alike. Let us look at few of these mistakes that are more likely to happen.

1) Do you need flash introductions for your website?

Occasionally, flash introductions can be a big headache in getting them set up. A lot of work goes into making one. More often than not they are not mandatory and can be skipped altogether. They are invisible to search engines and are known to annoy many people. They are also a complete waste of time and money.

2) Using too many keywords

Many a time using keywords in your website might draw enough traffic to it. This in turn can generate lots of revenue to you by different means. However, over doing it or having excess keywords could also spell disaster to your website. Many search engines in the market; including google, analyzes different sites and removes all common words like "but" and "and". In case you over use these words, search engines will mistake them for keywords and might delete them. If this happens, it will be highly undesirable for your website.

3) Does you website require fancy logo?

Please check if your website hosts a fancy logo. See to it that the logo doesn't get extended to the website buttons. If it does, you will be placing your efforts in areas where results may not be achieved. This is because; search engines do not consider a logo or graphics for generating traffic for you. They merely rely on the text placed in the site. If you realize this mistake, you probably will not place your effort in constructing a logo with an intention of attracting more visitors to your site.

4) Do you prefer style over substance?

What is more important to you in your site, style or substance? If you have been mesmerized by visuals and graphics, you are likely to have used them extensively in your site and at a cost of quality substance. This effort might have rendered your site pretty but would hardly attract any visitors in a linger run.

5) External help in getting the site done

Have you taken anyone's help in getting the website constructed? If so, you would have already committed a cardinal mistake. It is very important to know that both your business and the website need you all the time. By handing over the reins of creating a website to your friend, relative or an agency; you may have lost control over a part of your business to them. What your business needs is a passion, personality and knowledge all over it.

6) Website updating

When was your website created and when was the last time you updated it? Have you posted a blog recently? If your answer is 'No' to all these questions, then you probably own a stale website. These websites hardly manage to attract customers.

If you have made all these errors and willing to learn from your previous mistakes, chances are that you can still review your chances. But,for all this you need to change your attitude towards website designing.
