Domain names can be purchased for a period of more than a year but not in fractions or months. Generally, domain names are purchased for a period of 1 or 2 and then when they are about to expire they are further purchased for a further period of time.
Expired domains are those domains that have expired. In other words, people who bought the domain names for a period of 1 or 2 did not renew their purchase as a result of which there domain name expired. There are thousands of expired domain names available in the market. In order to purchase expired domain names you will have to register yourself at a website that offers the service of purchasing expired domain names. GoDaddy offers its customers the option to buy expired domains. It also tells you the names of the domains that are about to expire and offers you the service to immediately buy that domain name for you in case the owner of that domain name is not interested in renewing his or her domain name. For such service, you will have to pay a small fee and GoDaddy will register you for the domain market where you can buy and sell domains.
Expired domains are available either at their original price or it may be possible that they are being sold at current prices. By current price is meant, that if a domain is of high value in the market then you will have to pay a higher price in order to get that domain name, otherwise, you will not be able to purchase it. You might think that if you have to pay a higher price for an expired domain name then what is the benefit of purchasing expired domains?
The answer is quite simple. If the domain name is having a high rank on Google search engine and does not show a 301 error then such a domain name has not been added to the pool of expired domains and you can then use the ranking of that domain name to promote your own website and even build a new website. You can also place ads on that website and earn money from the same. This practice is followed by many users on the internet in order to earn more from Google adsense.
Another option is to retain a domain name that might prove to be valuable in the future because companies usually pay higher price for a domain name that has an exact or similar name as that of their company or product. But, the benefits of such domain names can never be predicted and you might have to wait for a long time. Still, you can retain the domain name and promote it and achieve higher ranking so that you can sell the same domain name at a higher value.
