What Is Search Engine Optimization? Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a hot topic. Using it will help grow your business online and get you noticed. But what is it really?
SEO describes how the search engine works for you, the website owner. We all going researching a topic much the same way - by entering the keywords into the search bar of say Google or Yahoo, and pressing search. The computer then provides a list of the most suitable links to answer the request.
How you get those results has a lot to do with search engine optimization, as should refect the keywords you entered into the search bar. Look at the top of the search page and you will see the number of relevant links. If you look at the results you will find the keywords you typed in are either in the title or on the website content line.
The goal is to optimise your web pages to match the most common keywords or phases used for that subject, so that it is your content that is found. It is very important that your website is found on the first two pages of search results, as no-one wants to sift through five million results. The top content or websites are the ones ranked first.
But what makes them top ranked? Most of the time it is the keywords that apeear in the content. Keywords that show up three to seven percent of the time are ranked higher than content with less frequent keywords. Search engines crawl your content and web pages for ranking and keyword-dense content has a good change of rising in the rankings. However, search engine optimization is not just about single keywords, but also two and three word phrases. The longer phrases have become a great way to rank high, since most content tries to match single keywords.
Be aware that search engine optimisation extends to your domain name as too. So, if your website is aimed at a specific niche, use keywords relevant to that niche in your domain name to drive traffic to it. Don't neglect your other webpages either, as they will also be crawled by the search engines, and optimised headers will also be ranked.
For the website owner, using a keyword optimizer makes short work of calculating your keyword density. There are also programs that rank the popularity of certain keyword phrases when searching for information using search engines. Remember, if you can't be found, it will be hard to sell your product or service to others.
It is imperative that you use search engine otimisation on your website, to drive traffic to your site. SEO is a free way to get good, targeted traffic to your website, and without traffic you will get no sales.
