Using Facebook For Marketing: Divergent Means Of Accomplishing It (Damien K Willis)

Aug 29, 2010

Given the popularity of social media networks, firms are increasingly looking into using Facebook for marketing. This is a smart idea, given how the website has millions of registered users and solid targeting features. People can be targeted by different demographics and/or interests through the site.

A few methods by which Facebook can be utilized as a promotional tool include placing advertisements; starting up corporate pages on the website; sending people invites to various promotional events through the website; organizing sweepstakes through the site; and incorporating the social networking site into other parts of a firm's marketing mix. These different aspects will be reviewed further below.

To begin, ads can be placed on Facebook in order to promote different goods and services. These ads can be placed on users' pages. They are oftentimes relevant to what specific users are interested in, and they could even be targeted according to a person's age and other variables. For instance, a 25-year-old woman who joined different cosmetics pages could see ads appear on her FB page about make-up for women in their twenties. She has the option of "liking" the ad and clicking on it for more information.

Corporate pages could also be started on FB. A corporation should strive to get as many individuals as it could to join its Facebook page. Businesses can use their pages on FB to make others aware of their latest products and services, as well as their ongoing activities. Individuals who have joined the pages can invite their friends to also join them. Companies should make a point of mentioning their FB pages within the other marketing materials that are sent out.

On top of what was already discussed, companies can organize promotional events through Facebook. People who join their pages could be sent invites to different functions that are meant to promote different products or services. For instance, a fast food company could send out invites for a free hamburger day. This will make people who have joined that company's page aware that they could receive a free hamburger on a certain day if they go into any one of the firm's thousands of locations. This gives the firm good publicity.

Companies could also conduct marketing giveaways, or sweepstakes, through Facebook. Firms could post ads that advertise a sweepstakes. It should be required for people to register with a company's website in order to enter the sweepstakes. This in turn helps a firm to add to its mailing list. This is critical, as a thriving corporate database of customer and prospect names is key to any firm's marketing success.

Last but not least, companies can incorporate their FB page into their other forms of advertising. For instance, they should mention on all mailers, emails, etc. That in addition to their website, they could also be found on Facebook. This in turn will encourage more people to join their FB page, which will hopefully lead to more website hits and sales.

In conclusion, an increasing amount of companies are utilizing the social media giant Facebook for marketing purposes. They can accomplish this by the placement of ads; setting up company pages on the site; inviting people to different promotional events through the site; conducting marketing giveaways through the website; and incorporating the social network media into other forms of marketing.
