Reducing The Amount You Spend On Web Hosting (Joanna Fredricson)

Feb 21, 2011

Web hosting can be expensive; especially if you haven't managed to monetise your website and it is all coming out of your own pocket. And if you have to pay other website related expenses every month then paying even 10 per month for web hosting can be a lot.

Here are a few ideas for how you can reduce your web hosting costs.

- The first thing you want to do is make sure that you haven't signed up for a hosting package that is way above your needs. You always need a little bit more than you are currently using but if you do see that you are not even hitting half of your bandwidth capacity each month and you are not even using much of your storage space at all, then you will know that you have a package that is too big for you. It might be the case that you should downsize and if this is so, then you can always upgrade again at a later date if you wish.

- If your blog is quite small and you have no intention of monetising it then you should consider a free web hosting option. If you want unlimited storage space and bandwidth for free then you could move your blog to something like Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. You can even use your own domain name with domain mapping. If you choose to go with Blogger you can still make money from Google Ads.

- You need to do some investigation if you find that you are using too much disk space and bandwidth despite not having high visitor numbers. It could be that your images, video, and audio, is over the top. With a lot of these files it is possible to reduce the quality and thus make them smaller.

You might also want to consider having your pictures, video, on a secondary source hopefully a free one. Embedding a player like YouTube onto your site will allow you to place all your videos on here instead of directly on your site.
