The "complementary" scheme refers to opposite colors while "triadic" are evenly spaced on the colour wheel. Similar shades on the wheel can be blended as well and this combination is called "analogous". "Monochromatic" scheming means that people have used the same color in different shades and hues.
Colors themselves can send different emotions, thoughts and physical reactions to whoever sees them. This can have powerful results as long as they are used correctly. The cultures of the world have been putting meaning to color over their histories and some have change over the centuries.
Black is authoritative, powerful and popular. It can imply evilness and submission. Often villains are depicted in black garb.
White: Representing innocence, purity and wholesomeness white is dazzling and reflects light. However in the web design world white can be a roadblock because large areas of the colour on websites can give the impression of blandness.
Red: An instant attention grabber it is so powerful that it can effect people physically, raising the heart rate and quickening breathing. Red cars are the most commonly stolen and while it may be good for a website it may work against it as well. Red can heighten confrontation and hinder negotiations.
Blue is the opposite of red and has completely different connotation. Blue can calm and relax the feelings and mind. It is also among the most popular choices when people are asked what their "favorite" color is.
Representing nature, such as forests and the sea green is a tricky color. It can calm like blue or be refreshing and alerting like red.
Yellow: This is the most vibrant color and the one easiest seen by a human due to the way light reflects off of it. It enters the eye and hits the brain like a locomotive. Yellow as well as red are known as the "buying" colours.
Purple: It emits feelings of luxuriousness, wealth and intelligence. It can be gentle like a plum or stinging like wine.
