Finally, The Ultimate List: The 7 Finest Medical Transcription Companies You Must Consider (Susan Eliot)
Sep 27, 2009
Once you have received your medical transcription certification, you are going to need to start looking for employment. There are quite a few companies out there that hire medical transcriptionists. Some are better than others, but it is ultimately up to you to decide who you want to work for.
There are dozens and dozens of online companies you can apply to once you become a medical transcriptionist. Seven of the top companies are Spheris, Accurate Typing Services, Oracle Transcription, Keystrokes, Tigerfish, Unlimited Transcription, and Transcription Relief Services. Now obviously, most medical transcription companies are wonderful to work for, but these tend to offer a bit more for the transcriptionists as far as benefits, compensation, training, etc.
Spheris is probably one of the best because they hire transcriptionists with little to no experience. The starting pay will depend on skill level, accuracy, speed, experience, etc. They offer a complete benefits package as well. They are also affiliated and very well-known with some of the most elite medical transcription training facilities.
Accurate Typing Services has only one negative aspect, and it is that they require at least 2 years of experience. But, two years really isn't a long time. You are realistically still thought of as somewhat of a beginner at that point. They offer full time benefits if the employee manages to put in 25 hours per week. The starting pay is also obviously based on experience.
Oracle Transcription is a great company to work for because they only give you the types of accounts they know you can do. If you do not have very much experience (at least 3 years are required for this particular company), then you will not be matched with something beyond your skill level. The pay is also legitimate.
Keystrokes also requires at least 3 years experience but offers a full time benefits package, which is not something all of the medical transcription companies offer.
Tigerfish will hire just about anyone who can type a report accurately and quickly. Upon applying, you will have to take several typing tests which will be checked for accuracy, grammar, punctuation, and speed. If hired, they will send you an email letting you know when to start.
Unlimited Transcription's starting pay is around 8 cents per line (cpl) and usually pays every two weeks. The pay is a little bit higher than some other companies that start off at 6 to 7 cpl with only two years of experience.
Transcription Relief Services is thought of to be one of the top companies to work for because they offer a benefits packages that includes group medical, dental, and vision coverage, a comprehensive 401K plan, paid vacation, holiday incentives, and flexible scheduling. The pay is also based on experience and production.
As stated above, the final decision is up to you when it comes to who you want to work for. There may be a company you would really want to work for but do not get hired for various reasons. When that happens, just continue researching to find the next best company and try again. In due time, you are sure to find the right medical transcription company to fit your every need.
