The Story Of Microsoft (Adam Robins)
Mar 3, 2011
I think it is great that Microsoft has grown so rapidly over such a short time. At the helm sits the most successful man in the world, Bill Gates. I don't know if he is still the richest man in the world, but he should be high up there. The company in a nut-shell has done very very well. I think they will continue to grow too.
Where's the secret sauce? Well I don't know honestly. I do know this. Microsoft was not the first company that he started. In fact he started many companies. I believe the first was in middle school. All these companies had to do with software. These business were sold off I think.
His very first business was about measuring the traffic on the roads. He created a software that took traffic data to help the city monitor the environment outdoors. This was still in the state of Washington. People loved him in fact. There were many counties asking him for this data.
There is one thing that is for sure, he always used partners for his needs. I didn't know this until recently. I used to think that it was all him. With that traffic business, he had his school friends help him and with Microsoft he had folk like Balmer and Allen, who by the way are both multi-billionaires now too. They were both really smart and this helped him.
Microsoft has a bunch of software suites. Many people know Microsoft in the consumer world. I would think of products such as windows mobile and windows OS for the PC. There is also an enterprise side though. These are things like Windows server 2008, Sharepoint, Dynamics, and even SQL server. Most people that are not involved in technology have probably not even heard of these products.
Some people are just huge Microsoft bigots. They love Microsoft and will continue to use it all day. This is what Microsoft intends to do. They go in and create monopolies for themselves. Their business model had been very "sticky." The Microsoft business model is something that even Warren Buffett can learn from.
