MS Word 2007 Help: Word Styles and Style Sets (Stacy Moore)

Mar 2, 2011

While Microsoft Word's default font may look appealing as is, you can give your document extra punch by taking advantage of its built-in styles. Not only do MS Word styles quickly transform your plain Word document into an attractively formatted document, you can use these built-in Word styles for other purposes.

First, take a look at the Home tab on your Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 "ribbon." At the far right, you should see a section labeled Styles. You'll see several icons representing different styles that you can apply to your text. Go ahead and highlight some text and hover your mouse over one of these icons. See how it changes the style of the text? If you like the change, click the icon once again to apply the change. If the icons you see don't quite fit your needs, you can scroll through the list to display others.

Another option is to click the "Change Styles" icon. When you click the down arrow on this icon, you'll see three basic options: Style Set, Colors, and Font. While each of these options should be explored, for our purposes let's focus on Style Set. Click on Style Set and you'll see another menu with several predefined style sets. Choose one and hover your mouse over it to see how applying a different style set affects the look of your document. If any appeal to you, click it to make the change.

Once you've selected a style set, or opted to keep the default style set, use the different styles within the style set to differentiate the different areas of your text. For example, use the Title style for your titles, Heading 1 for your main section headings, Heading 2 for your subheadings, and Normal for regular body text.

Styles have another perk: You can quickly generate a table of contents in Microsoft Word! The heading and title styles tell MS Word about important parts of the document. Save time and avoid having to type the contents page manually by using styles and the Table of Contents tool.

MS Word 2007 styles are easy to use. They give your Word document a professional look, and they make it super-easy to create a table of contents page.
