Citing Sources with Word 2007 Made Simple (Stacy Moore)

Mar 3, 2011

Citing sources with Word 2007, or just about any edition of Microsoft Word for that matter, is a breeze - once you know what to do. For illustrative purposes, we'll focus on managing sources in the 2007 edition of Word.

The Microsoft Word References Tab

To find the reference tools, you'll need to go to the Ribbon and click on the References tab. Here, you should see a area labeled as "Citations & Bibliography." The section displays multiple options including Insert Citation, Manage Sources, Style, and Bibliography.

To take advantage of these tools and begin inserting properly formatted citations, you must first enter details about each of your sources such as publication title, authors, publication date, and so on. Do this by clicking on the Manage Sources section. After clicking on Manage Sources, find the "New" button and click it. This generates a small web form that will prompt you to enter details about the source.

Begin Citing Sources with Word 2007

Now that the sources have been entered, it's time to start citing! As you refer to sources throughout your document, you cite them in the text by navigating to the Citations & Bibiliography section and selecting Insert Citation.

Word supports many different citation types, making it possible to choose a specific citation format such as MLA or APA citations. Simply select the desired citation type in the Style section's dropdown box.

The Finishing Touch: Add a Works Cited Page

After citing your sources throughout the text, you'll then need to list them at the end of the document. This page of sources is also known as the "bibliography" or "works cited" page.

Fortunately, this is a simple matter. Once again, navigate to the Citations & Bibiliography section and this timeclick Bibliography. You'll notice a dropdown arrow with two choices: Bibliography and Works Cited. Choose the one that you prefer and Word will automatically create it in the proper format!

Managing sources with MS Word's built-in citation tool is just about as easy as it gets. This tool makes it easy to manage and cite sources without having to worry about the format. Best of all, the sources that you entered in your existing document are now available for any future document.
