Take Your Time When Choosing A New Printer (Mark Dunne)

Aug 4, 2009

Recently we decided we needed a new printer for office. The old printer is a few years old now at this stage and starting to have a few problems with paper jamming and a few other errors occurring every now and again. It seems to have its own little mind whether it wants to stay on the network are not so at this stage we had enough undecided to start looking at new printers to see exactly what is available out there.

I guess there are some basics that you need to consider before purchasing a new one. The one we have at the moment is an inkjet printer it is rather slow when it comes to printing large documents. One of the criteria I have with the new printer is that it will be a LaserJet and as the pricing of these has now dropped significantly it's easy to pick up plenty of bargains. The printer will need to have a good page per minute output or PPM for short. I'm also looking for something that is offering good quality printing for documentation and photographs.

Connectivity is also important and is something that many people miss. I want a few different options for connectivity as the environment may change over time. Initially it should have an Ethernet port for connecting an Ethernet cable or category 5 cable. You find that most big laser printers will all come with a serial port, but most companies neglect to include a serial cable when you are purchasing so I need to be aware of this extra cost which could be as much as $20. USB port should also be included for direct connectivity from a PC or laptop. It's also essential in has a USB port if I wish to

connect a Bluetooth dongle which will then allow me to print from my laptop directly to a printer or print directly from a mobile phone with Bluetooth without having to transfer photographs to a PC for printing it.

We're starting to see wireless adapters appear in print is now, which to be honest makes so much sense because it enables you to print without the need of having to be directly connected or having to worry about finding cables or setting up a complete network just to print out some documentations.

Lots of printer is now coming with memory card readers to allow you to read the data off a card without having to use a computer. Generally the printer will also have an LCD screen, which will allow you select the document or a photograph before printing out. Some will have extra features built-in and will allow you to edit or select certain textile printing before you actually prints.

There is a lot to choose from at present in the printing market is really a matter of making sure that we get are researched done before finally making a choice.
