The New Concerns for the Computer Literati (Nelson Pellew)
Feb 20, 2010
Machine-pressed and forged from rare earth metals and intricate grooves of silicon and copper, the modern computer is more of mystery to most people than the far reaches of explored space. This is no exaggeration, for indeed, to understand the subtle difference between an ITX and a micro ATX motherboard, you would either have to be a degreed IT professional or a computer peddler. Indeed, most people abide by one principle when it comes to hardware: will it work when I plug it in.
Again, having said this, it is apparent that most computers -- including the fashionable Mac -- are equipped with wireless access and more memory than an ardent computer "geek" could have hoped for five years ago. I am aware there are other facets involved with purchasing a computer, namely price, capacity, and processing speed. Likewise, one must be aware of whether or not the laptop or desktop possesses wireless Internet access.
Few individuals buying computers now bother with such passe concerns as RAM and processor speed. The technological innovations have improved exponentially and to the point where the concerns of a would-be computer buyer ten years ago have been superseded. The newest HP desktops and Macbooks can process information, in some cases, ten or twenty times faster than the models of yore.
The key concern, that remains touch and go, is connectivity. Thanks in large part to innovations like the aforementioned micro ATX motherboard, the thirst for incredible processing speeds has been slaked and now, it seems, the onus of concern still revolves around memory capacity and connectivity. Of course, with the prevalence of external storage devices and flash drives, the need for storage capacity has also been satisfied.
Indeed, as the hardwired capacities of computers exceed all feasible expectations of speed and memory, the concerns have begun to become more and more aesthetically based. Does the computer fit one's lifestyle? Does it accentuate one's ensemble? All new laptops, whether they are Macs or PC, have been hardwired with wireless systems, meaning they can instantly connect to the Internet. This should pacify the great concerns of the connection-crazed. It seems a turn has been taken for the fashionable.
