Low-Tech Money Saving Solutions for High-Tech Printer Ink Cartridges (Wendy Moyer)

Sep 23, 2009

One of the most expensive things about printing out documents and photos is the cost of printer ink cartridges for your ink jet printer. And what can make it even worse is throwing away an ink jet cartridge that still has printer ink in it.

How to Rejuvenate a Clogged Printer Ink Cartridge

If you begin to see the quality of your printing deteriorate and you're pretty certain that you still have ink in the cartridge, here's something you can try. There's a pretty good chance that the ink nozzles are either dried up or clogged.

So, what you want to do is remove the cartridge from your printer and immerse it in water for several hours. This can be bottled water, but since tap water works just as well, why spend the money on the bottled stuff?

Take the cartridge out of the water after three or four hours and very gently blot it dry with a paper towel. Then let it air dry overnight.

The following day put it back into your printer and - now this is an option - say a little prayer. With a little bit of luck the printer ink cartridge should make prints that are as good as they were when you first took the cartridge out of its box.

If you want to avoid the hassle of soaking and drying your printers ink cartridges because their nozzles have clogged you can do a nozzle check. Although it does use about six percent of the ink, it can be cheap insurance if you save twenty five percent or more of ink that you otherwise would not be able to use.

How to Save Money When You Print Things from the Internet

It's not unusual for things to get a bit disorganized when you print out pages from the Internet. Images might shift around, entire pages can become blank, and other unexpected things can go wrong.

To avoid having to reprint these pages (and save all of that printer ink) make sure to use your print preview function. It will show you exactly what will be printed and how it will look before you print it. Take a couple of moments to scan your documents and you can easily save a lot of money.

Another way to save money while printing documents off the Internet is to print only what you need. If you only want to print a part of the page, highlight the text you want before printing it out.

And finally, follow your manufacturer's instructions and power down your printer the correct way. If you don't, and you cut the power when the print heads are in the wrong position, your ink will dry up faster.
