Ink Cartridges Secrets - Does Buying in Bulk Really Save You Money? (Wendy Moyer)

Sep 23, 2009

Buying ink cartridges online can save you a lot of money. And buying ink cartridges in bulk on the Internet has the potential of saving you even more. However there are a number of things to consider before you take that route.

If you do an online search for print cartridges or replacement ink you'll be sure to come across quite a few stores that offer their customers incentives for purchasing cartridges from them in bulk. Sometimes it's a discount on each cartridge ordered (with a minimum quantity purchased). Other times you might get bonus printers ink cartridges or free shipping.

The big question is whether or not it's worth getting ten, twenty, or more cartridges in the same shipment. With that in mind, here are several things to consider before buying.

What Are Your Printing Habits?

Your most important consideration will probably be how often you use your printer(s) and how many printers you have. If you use your ink jet printer day in and day out and print out a lot of long documents and color photos you would be more likely to be able to take advantage of the savings. However, if you use your printer only occasionally you most likely will be better off buying ink cartridges in much smaller quantities.

That's because unopened ink cartridges last for only a year or two. And that's if you store them properly, at room temperature, in a dry area.

If it takes you a month or less to replace your cartridges and you can get a terrific deal on ten or fewer cartridges, then buying in bulk can work for you. If not, you could end up throwing out many of the printer cartridges that you bought because they will have become useless by the time you need them. Hence, any money you might have saved has now become a loss.

If you have only one or two printers in your home, figure out, on average, how long it takes before you have to replace the ink cartridges. However, if you're buying cartridges for a business that has many printers running most of the time, then you probably won't have any problem buying in bulk. And you'll have the replacements available when you need them.

The final thing to consider would be how much money you will actually save if you decide to buy your cartridges in bulk. If you're getting a substantial discount and have the space to store the ink cartridges it can be a worthwhile investment. But, if you're only saving a little money on shipping you might be better off to buy them as you need them.
