How to Add Memory Modules to a Computer's System Board (John B. Emmerson III)

Mar 11, 2010

One of the most important computer upgrades is ram. Installing RAM can greatly intensify your computer's performance. The more applications you use at once and the more memory concentrated the applications are, the more space you will need. Anti-virus softwares are notorious memory hogs. If you notice your pc running slow or hanging when various programs are working, it is time to add up RAM to your pc desktop board.

Turn off your computer and disconnect the power cable. Turn the pc tower case so the back faces you. Decide the amount of memory you can add to your systemboard. Visit the systemboard manufacturer's site, or the site for your computer's model, for accurate specifications and kind of memory modules required.

Open the case on the computer. The screws are located at the back of the case. Remove all screws holding the case in position, and lift the cover from the case.Search for the existing memory modules. These will be cards on the motherboard itself. There will be no connecting wires for them. They will be inserted into some slots.

Keep in mind how the existing RAM are positioned. The new modules be supposed to be in the same position. In an null slot, press the new module in. Press it down, not at any angle. Push down until you hear the module click into slot. The clips that keeps the RAM in slot will clip into the slots on either side of the RAM automatically. Restart the pc so the system can accept the new memory modules.

Points of Caution If you are not confident as to which RAM modules to purchase, look at your existing modules. If you meet much resistance, realign the module and try again. Pushing too hard can destruct the pins and prevent the memory module from running.
